The short answer: compare Wise and Revolut first
If you want a separate card for travel, start by comparing Wise and Revolut. We recommend checking these two options first, alongside a Visa or Mastercard you already own. The right choice depends on the card issued in your country, its fees and whether Alipay supports your intended payment.
A provider name alone cannot guarantee approval. Linking a card, completing a merchant purchase and sending money to a personal receiving code are different checks. Keep a backup card from a different issuer for your trip.

Compare your Alipay card options
| Option | Why consider it? | Check before applying |
|---|---|---|
| Wise | Wise publishes specific instructions for linking its cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay. | Card availability, activation, conversion charges and the current terms for your country. |
| Revolut | A travel-card option with documented CNY spending where Visa or Mastercard is accepted. | Your plan’s current fees, card settings, account eligibility and Alipay’s card-linking result. |
| Your existing Visa or Mastercard | You may already have a suitable card without opening another account. | Foreign-currency fees, issuer approval and access to verification while travelling. |
The table is a practical checklist, not a ranking of measured acceptance rates. We have not independently tested every card, issuer or country.
Using a Wise card with Alipay
Wise’s own guidance describes adding a Wise card in Alipay’s bank-card area and completing the requested identity checks. Activate your card if required, enter its details only in the official Alipay app, and review the selected funding card before paying.
Compare the current conversion and card charges for your account. Avoid assuming that a referral offer makes every payment free or that a card issued in one country has the same conditions everywhere.
Wise also offers an in-app Alipay QR feature for eligible customers in certain countries. This is separate from linking a Wise card to Alipay and has its own region and QR-code rules. It does not mean that every personal donation code is supported.

Using a Revolut card with Alipay
Revolut is our other travel-card option to compare, especially if you want an alternative to the card from your usual bank. Revolut documents card spending in CNY where Visa and Mastercard are accepted. That general spending support does not confirm that every Revolut card or Alipay payment type is eligible.
Try adding your own card through Alipay’s official flow and follow any approval request in Revolut. Check the current terms for your account’s country and plan, including conversion charges and spending limits. Keep access to both apps and your verification phone number during the trip.

If your bank keeps declining Alipay payments
- Check the final transaction status before trying again. Resolve a pending or unclear charge with the wallet or issuer.
- Read the exact error and look for an approval or verification request in the bank’s app.
- Check the card balance, online-payment controls and the payment method selected in Alipay.
- If another supported Visa or Mastercard is available, try a different issuer after resolving any pending payment.
- If the issue continues, call the card issuer using its official contact details. Ask whether it declined the charge and what verification is needed.
A failure with one receiving code does not prove your card will fail at every merchant. International-card restrictions can differ between personal transfers and merchant payments.
Choose your card before departure
Check whether the provider serves your country, how long a card takes to arrive, what verification is required and which charges apply to your expected spending. Read the current provider terms before signing up through a referral link.
Set up your wallet while you still have reliable access to your phone number and bank app. A supported small payment can help you understand the flow, but it confirms that transaction only. Prepare a backup way to pay and keep the official support contacts available.
