Start inside the official app

Use the official WeChat app and follow its current registration instructions. Tencent’s visitor guide describes registering with an international phone number and linking a supported international card to Weixin Pay.

Navigation and eligibility can depend on account settings and region. Follow the current in-app prompts if they differ from an online guide.

Review before you confirm

When you scan a supported receiving code, check the recipient and transaction details. Confirm the amount, currency, funding source, and any fees. Stop if something differs from what you intended.

One successful transaction cannot prove every merchant or receiving code will work. An unsuccessful test should be investigated using the message from WeChat and your card issuer.

Prepare a second way to pay

Keep access to your bank’s authentication method and support channel. Consider setting up another payment method before departure so you have options if your first transaction is declined.

Choose a backup card from a different issuer and check its current fees and eligibility before departure.
